Lost Memories from Latent Space is a generative art project that explores the hidden layers of how neural networks interpret and reimagine visual culture, as well as the latent space and internal mechanisms of neural networks. Drawing on a vast dataset of Renaissance paintings depicting mythological scenes, the series invites us to peer beneath the surface of machine vision. The project begins with a CLIP-based semantic clustering of the corpus, dividing it into 150 conceptual categories. Each category informs the training of a dedicated conditional GAN model. From these, 150 unique generative loops emerge, each a traversal through latent space, visually unfolding the internal logic and aesthetic tendencies of the model. At the core of each piece is a dynamic journey through the intermediate layers of the GAN architecture, revealing the evolution of internal neural representations as the final image takes shape. Feature activations - local ‘blobs’ of information - are tracked across multiple layers and channels to visualize their emergence, transformation, and interconnection. These clusters are analyzed and highlighted using color palettes sampled from the statistical distribution of the generated outputs, producing responsive heatmaps and abstract diagrams that echo the tones of the source material. Occasionally full-layer visualizations reveal the hallucinatory inner logic of the network, glimpses of a visual world inaccessible to the human eye. These inner states shift from chaotic abstraction to ordered representation, allowing us to witness the AI’s act of visual understanding in real time. Sound is generated alongside the visuals by translating the shifting ‘blob’ structures into waveforms. As visual patterns grow or contract, the accompanying sound dynamically responds, creating a synesthetic experience that binds the technical and the aesthetic into a coherent flow. Lost Memories from Latent Space charts a collective imagination built from the shared visual language of an entire cultural dataset. It invites viewers to reflect on the layered and often opaque nature of machine perception, and on the rich space that exists between human visual understanding and artificial synthesis. This series is part of Orkhan's ongoing studio research.

Her latest series, BURNT UMBER BROKEN SILVER AMERICAN SPIRIT, exemplifies this fusion through uniquely created compositions. Drawing from the imagery of the American West, the works layer geometric shapes, doors, and abstract textures over richly coloured depictions of the landscape. The doors evoke a sense of transition, inviting viewers to step into portals that symbolize shifts between states of being or consciousness, much like her earlier Room series (2021). Cortright’s vibrant paintings are feasts of visual intricacies, where abstracted layers of texture suggest an interplay between natural and artificial elements. The juxtaposition of idyllic scenes and destructive forces, such as fires, serves as a metaphor for the polarizing aspects of life in America, evoking themes of freedom and conflict. This body of work challenges traditional boundaries, inviting viewers to reconsider what painting means in a digital age and to explore realms of imagination, fantasy, and introspection.

IN YOUR DREAMS is an audio visual experience that explores memories and dreams through AI-generated environments and surreal, drifting erratic camera movement. Drawing from a personal archive of influences: abandoned buildings, video game maps from GoldenEye 64, and FPV drone videos, backrooms culture; the work invites viewers into constructed spaces that feel familiar yet unplaceable. Each scene is a digital hallucination: tiled rooms, endless corridors, and bizarre voids rendered with quiet tension and dreamlike detachment. Rooted in a background of 3D design and cinematic composition, the series was produced using a custom pipeline of AI tools including ComfyUI, MidJourney, and FLUX LoRAs. Still frames are generated and refined through iterative curation, then animated with floating POV motion and ambient audio to heighten the sense of unease. The result is an immersive meditation on memory, emptiness, and the uncanny emotional pull of spaces that almost existed—places you feel like you've visited, but only in your dreams.

level 1️⃣ comprises a cast of absurd and surreal characters, that are drawn from the depths of internet culture and meme lore. These characters, though often humorous, are imbued with an eerie sense of depth, evoking the strange beauty found in Studio Ghibli's most peculiar stories. They exist in a world where nothing makes complete sense yet everything feels intimately relatable. Through the looping GIFs and fragmented visuals, tinysoul gives these figures life, turning fleeting internet memes into permanent characters with their own stories, struggles, and emotional arcs. In level 1️⃣, the absurdity of the digital realm comes alive in characters that oscillate between the hilarious and the haunting. They become scenes that feel like dreamlike, glitchy fragments of a larger narrative—where humor is twisted, and meaning is constantly evolving. Tinysoul invites us to engage with these figures, to see ourselves reflected in their pixelated oddities, and to find new interpretations in the strange, shared world they inhabit.

This collection began by trying to use a machine to recreate a memory.&#x20; I gathered old family photographs - some mine, others collected from friends, relatives, strangers. I trained a model to learn what a family looks like: the poses, the lighting, the closeness, the distance.&#x20; What came out wasn’t memory.&#x20; It wasn’t even family.&#x20; It was something stranger. A series of images that felt almost familiar - like dreams passed off as truth. Children who never age. Faces that repeat. Smiles that don’t quite reach.&#x20; The machine wasn’t recreating what was.&#x20; It was inventing what it thinks we want to remember.&#x20; In spirit, this series echoes Gerhard Richter’s blurred photo paintings - where history is softened, identities dissolve, and what remains is the emotional residue of what might have been. But here, the blur is digital. The memory never existed.&#x20; This is the result:&#x20; 33 portraits of ghosts, stitched from borrowed lives.&#x20; This isn’t nostalgia.&#x20; It’s recognition, disfigured.&#x20; It’s love, simulated.&#x20; It’s memory—remembered wrong. m0dest

In On Photography and Regarding the Pain of Others, Susan Sontag argues that repeated exposure to images of suffering can numb our capacity for genuine empathy. Drawing on contemporary social media practices and Jean Baudrillard’s concept of hyperreality, wherein simulations—staged or digitally constructed—supplant the “real,” this project intentionally blurs the line between authentic and artificial narratives in the age of AI. The American two-party system has become a theatre of the absurd, where voters are increasingly forced to choose the lesser evil rather than vote their conscience. The Democrats continue to shift rightward, leaving little meaningful opposition to the rise of authoritarianism. Figures like Trump and Elon Musk perform like clowns in a collapsing empire, distracting from the erosion of civil rights and democratic norms with spectacle and ego. Canada’s recent election, where many voted strategically to avoid becoming America’s metaphorical 51st State, only underscores how deeply this dysfunction reverberates beyond U.S. borders. Electoral reform, once promised by Canada’s Liberal Party in 2015, remains unfulfilled, in spite of former Prime Minster’s Justin Trudeau’s empty regrets. What’s left is political stagnation and growing disillusionment. Jess MacCormack’s work—digital or otherwise—cuts through this despair, offering raw, emotional insight. Elections is no exception. Inspired by Jørgen Leth's Black and White cult classic The Perfect Human (1968) which raises many simple yet philosophical questions about who the perfect human is, what it means to be human, or perfect, this work applies unsupervised machine learning and experimental filmmaking techniques to reexamine and question the contested notion of perfection in the eyes of artificial intelligence. Later the remake of the computer-generated moving images are transformed from digital recreation to an analog artifact of transparencies which completed the cycles from analog film to digital video and back to 16mm format, from motion pictures to still images, and then latent-space interpolation, from a proxy of human memories to the machine learning construct. The digital transfer of The Perfect Human in 16mm has won the Award of Excellence at 37th Image Forum Film Festival in Tokyo, Japan (2023).

"Soledad" is a very common female name in Spanish; it also means solitude. Soledad is the story of a specter who lives in isolation in nature but feels the desire to be with someone. The short film explores the theme of disconnection. It can be interpreted as a metaphor for someone living in a foreign country, for autism and the challenges of communication, or more broadly, it reflects on the human need to connect and the difficulties some individuals face in doing so. Ironically we feel alone in a hyperconnected society. Soledad was selected by OpenAI as part of Sora Selects screening in the Metrograph Movie Theater in New York in February 2025.

By deliberately exploiting the semantic gaps in AI training data, Uglyy Fruuit produces unusual, eerie compositions that reveal the underlying biases, blindspots, and unexpected poetry within machine learning systems. Created with various visual and LLM models running locally in Python environment with ComfyUI interface. Used technique of regional prompting where parts of the image are masked and influenced with different prompts or input pictures.

Earlier this year I made over 90,000 images that were based off of the album cover art for Hall & Oates hit album Private Eyes which was released in 1981 -- Pipi Universel insists that he was not the art designer for this album but I have yet to see any proof of his claims -- in my mind the album cover is a prime example of some of his earliest design work. Private Eyes yielded two #1 hits on the USA Billboard charts -- both the title track and I Can't Go For That (No Can Do). Another track Did It In A Minute reached #9 on the charts. My main attraction to this album art in particular was seeing how Stable Diffusion would recreate and reinterpret the halftone patterns and hand-rendered stipple-ink patterns from the pre-digital era of graphic design. This led to some interesting discoveries as many of the outputs I was getting had textures unlike anything I'd ever seen before -- and the compositions were wild as well. So I just kept it running 24/7 for several days while inputting various different reference images and prompts and settings -- and in turn running those different combinations into different custom models that I had created. Here are 51 images culled from those experiments -- when I showed some of the pieces to Shaun Keenan he commented that they looked like pictures of a tv screen that was showing a paused frame of a VHS tape -- I really liked that description because that's exactly what some of the textures remind me of -- a certain quality of pre-digital era glitch & grain. Rêveries, explores how the latent structures of artificial neural networks can be repurposed into generative painting engines: leveraging convolutional neural networks (CNNs) designed for object recognition, Mammadov reorients the model from classification to creation, coaxing it to synthesize intricate textures by capturing correlations among feature maps across its layered hierarchy. As these textures evolve, the network distills the statistical essence of natural imagery while abstracting away familiar forms, revealing a dual function—both a creative instrument and a lens through which to glimpse the deep representational spaces that underlie artificial perception. Sheets is a generative artwork that displays the explicit mathematical logic underlying its own visuals. Revealing the data that drives the artwork, as part of the artwork itself, is a unique approach to algorithmic art that is reductive and pure – yet simultaneously vast and overwhelming. Here, the generative process produces infinite visual tables that evoke the ever-rising power of the spreadsheet, and the endless datafication of our world. Both operationally and visually inspired by large table-based datasets that are designed to simplify complex systems, Sheets instead amplifies its own complexity. Using the vernacular of spreadsheet interfaces, early computing displays, and the specification diagrams for printed circuit boards, these works repurpose functional calculations to provoke more than it solves – creating intricate and illegible compositions that remind us of the unknowable logic shaping our world. Like nature, and reality itself, the resulting pile of maths in this series are perhaps best accepted and admired for their beauty and sense of logic, rather than continuously dissected and understood in full. In response to each individual’s perception of beauty and order, collectors of these generative artworks will choose their own unique output from the artist’s core algorithm – six of which will be pre-selected by the artist and translated into special engraved metal plate works. From a series of photocopy collages that started in late 2017 and continues to this day – the works are created using Photoshop layering techniques from government document source materials – no AI is used – these textures are built from the margins of scans of photocopies of documents that were in less than pristine shape – many of which, ironically, are stamped at the top of each page with the phrase Best Available Copy.
