The Nike Air Jordan, first worn by Michael Jordan in 1984 and publicly released in 1985, was a symbol of defiance from its inception. At the time, NBA rules stated a shoe must be 51% white. As the Air Jordan was only 28% white, the Bulls were fined $5,000 ($14k in today's value) each game they were worn. All 50,000 pairs sold out.
