Twenty years ago, I defended my master's thesis in the arts, Digital Dreams. Short dialogue from the movie 2010: The Year We Make Contact, a sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey, between SAL (HAL's sister) and Dr. Chandra, a computer scientist, inspired this piece:
SAL 9000: "Will I dream?"
Dr. Chandra: "Of course you will. All intelligent creatures dream. Nobody knows why. Perhaps you will dream of HAL, just as I often do".
So, if computers can dream, what would they dream of? I'm returning to dream archetypes, which I briefly touched upon then. On the one hand, I'm tracing parallels between human archetypes from psychology and art history, and on the other, typical computer algorithms that I regard as analogous.
