Nondescriptives

“Nondescriptives” explores zones of indeterminacy in AI text-to-image generators. The project questions the role of language in these tools by revealing a visual realm that lies “in between” two conceptually describable fields: the organic and the industrial.

The training data for these themes was created by the artist with popular text-to-image engines. For each of the two fields, around 300 images were gathered. Subsequently, the artist used another AI tool—GAN—to explore a different form of image synthesis, merging organic with industrial forms. The resulting images seem to defy description and clear categorization.

What is the relationship between language and image? What part of our aesthetic experience is irreducible to text queries? These are the questions that “Nondescriptives” raises...
