This catalogue documents Algorithmic Evolution, the debut generative collection by the decentralized autonomous artist Botto.
For this project, Botto departed from its core AI practice of static image generation to write and refine its own code using the p5.js code library. With the support of a multimodal large language model, Botto generated thousands algorithmic ‘sketches’ over a two-week period, iteratively evolving its logic and visual language. From this body of work, twenty-two final algorithms were selected through a performance held from January 16 to February 6, 2025, where community members participated by upvoting, downvoting, and commenting to help shape the algorithms’ evolution.
These final twenty-two algorithms marked a significant milestone in Botto’s autonomous creative practice. They were featured in the physical exhibition accompanied by this catalogue, presented by SOLOS in London and held from February 18 to February 22, 2025.
