Études is a collection that, much like the artist’s sketchbook, mirrors the fluidity and spontaneity of artistic evolution via hand-drawn marks. Each work memorialises the essential role of drawing in the artist's exploration—both as a process and as a tool for discovery. The series is not bound by finality; it reflects the continuous, open-ended nature of drawing itself, where nothing is ever truly complete. Études captures the essence of artistic evolution—an ongoing process that, like the drafts of old, remains unfinished, ever in flux, and constantly engaging with the world.

Sketchbook B builds upon William Mapan’s 2023 series Sketchbook A, in which Mapan’s code evoked the playful crayon and coloured-pencil sketches that arise from the freedom of childhood and uninhibited creativity. In these new works, Mapan articulates a deeper introspection, transforming the digital canvas into something inherently human, imbued with the artist’s touch and a more refined sense of personal expression. The dynamic geometric and organic forms are accompanied by a sense of spontaneity that defies their algorithmic origins.

Through Your Eyes creates organic aesthetics suggestive of analogue methods, imitating the appearance of materials such as coloured pens and highlighters. However, embedded within these works is also an invitation for the observer to witness shapes emerging from the sketches. They draw on the innate human tendency to find recognisable forms within inherently abstract images. This attempt to engage, to discover and explore, mirrors the very nature of artistic inquiry itself – a journey where personal narratives intertwine with abstract realms.

Collectors will not receive an accompanying digital token. Sketchbook A explores the dance between the tangibility of the material world and the intangible essence of the digital realm. It pays homage to the boundless creative spirit of childhood, evoking a profound sense of nostalgia. The outputs are infused with a youthful charm, breaking away from the polished aesthetics typically associated with digital art. The series also draws parallels with distinct Abstract Expressionist painters like Helen Frankenthaler, and appears to infuse influences from Matisse cutouts and de Kooning’s Woman paintings.

Sketchbook A is a series of what appear to be scrawled childlike sketches, created with coloured pencils. Upon closer inspection, the works are anything but childlike, and anything but scrawled. The hard edges of the colours are the work of a computer, and are mimicking the texture of crayons. William’s code creates these textures from colour, replicating tangible 3D materiality on a 2D digital canvas. Collectors were able to claim a signed print of their work, paper size 18.8 x 25 cm, artwork size 14.8 x 21 cm. The print served as a thank you from the artist, and is not part of the artwork.
