“Nobody, Not Even The Rain”
2025
Audio visual sequence with adjoining physical painting - 150 x 150 x 4cms (59 x 59 inches) (included as a gift with primary purchase).
Built over the course of the last 6 months, this work stands as my largest physical and digital offering to date and a nod to the poem”somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond” by EE Cummings.
With an entirely digital sound score built from coding and manipulating synth and plug in instruments, the score aims to express the inexpressible crescendo of being entranced by another. The feeling of losing yourself in a moment, where time and space seem to slow down in a trance like state. This is a notion sometimes felt when creating work of this nature, pouring over the physical layers and lost in the dance of creation; to then watching the forms and tones come to life when animated digitally with their adjoining sonic partners.
Somebody described this work as seeing two abstracted figures dancing in a rain storm before learning the title, and that’s stayed with me.
As a multi-disciplinary artist, Cummings asked himself in a self interview (Foreword to an Exhibit: II), “Tell me, doesn't your painting interfere with your writing?” and answered, “Quite the contrary: they love each other dearly.” - something which resonates deeply with my desire to build sonic, digital and physical environments to explore.
“nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals the power of your intense fragility: whose texture compels me with the colour of its countries, rendering death and forever with each breathing
(i do not know what it is about you that closes and opens; only something in me understands the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses) nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands”
