As the saying goes, "In order to find the edge, you must risk going over the edge". This image is living proof that I have seen beyond the edge. Hanging out of a helicopter 2000 feet above Manhattan while the pilot performs an aggressive banking maneuver would be the edge for most people. This, however, is where I love to be. When I was preparing this image, this quote about residing on or over the edge rested firmly in my mind. At the same time another thought came to mind. After every flight I send a very short text to my wife that simply says "ALIVE" to let her know we're safe and back on the ground.
As an aviation aerial photographer, I do a considerable amount of planning. I have to consider flight time, communication with the carrier, getting proper clearances from various flight agencies involved, and planning with the pilot. The relationship with the pilot is special. I'm communicating my hopes for the type of shots, and the pilot has to interpret those hopes and maneuver the aircraft to achieve the shots within safety confines. Not only am I putting the creative vision in their hands, I am putting my life in their hands.
When I mentioned this to a friend of mine who is also an aerial photographer in NYC, he said he sends the same message to his wife after he lands. We both unknowingly have been following the same routine after every flight for years.
So, my point is...I've seen the edge, I've looked over it, and safely come back thanks to the pilots I've flown with. The view from over the edge is beautiful!!
