Comments: A photographer named, Mag, met with us in the morning. We spoke through photography. He led us around Tokyo to follow the light and shadows. We made our way to the train station to meet with Sawaco in Chiba. Sawaco, just like Emi, happily introduced us to her friends across different Japanese cities to meet us for the project. Friendships spanning from Okinawa to Hokkaido. We arrived in Chiba. Sawaco picked us up in her car and surprised us for the location of the portrait. After 20 minutes, we arrived at an empty parking lot at a nature trail somewhere in her home town. It was a sacred place from her childhood. A beautiful blossoming rose garden. Colors of roses ranging the entire rainbow. There is a trail from the parking lot. Over a few small stone bridges aside calm running water. We entered the garden and were surrounded by many species of blooming flowers and honey bees. The fresh air was filled with sweet scents. Sawaco showed us her favorite part of the park with a large concentration of pink and yellow roses by the clocktower. The only people there were 3 gardeners who maintain the roses; the clocktower was their maintenance shed. Even though it was Sawaco's portrait it felt strange to leave out Mag who has been with us the whole day. I asked if it was okay if Mag and Sawaco would be in the portrait together. Sawaco said, of course, in Japanese. Once I started rolling Mag started taking pictures of Sawaco. I directed her to kneel beside the flowers and to smell them. Representing the aromatic fragrance hidden in the frame.
