Comments: My buddy Onil connected me to his artist friend Ryan. His studio was facing directly onto Tamarama beach, where all the dogs go to play. Where you can walk on the rocks like it's an aquatic planet, or a water ride at Disney Land. Ryan runs a pottery studio right above the beach. A dream of paradise. Art and Ocean together like that. Ryan asked if I ever made pottery before, "I did not but I always wanted to!" So he sat me down at a clay station, wet my hands, and threw down some clay for me to play with. It felt natural making the gentle grooves of the tea cup we were making. I busted up a thick cup for tea ceremonies and felt proud of myself. Now we had to wait! So we ran down to the water with Sarah and Zena, who were also playing with clay in the studio. Ryan brought down to the low tide a half broken and still wet pot, after we smoked a bit of pots. While we were in the ocean to make an artistic sacrifice to the water gods the tide started to rise and the coral pond flooded our friends. Looking back it's one of those things that push you forward. For years while living in NYC I would always walk past a pottery studio called Mano on 26th street on my way to the photo studio. And every day I would tell myself I would take a class. Ten years later, in the middle of a strangers garage, Far out in the corners of Australia I found myself, getting in touch with an ancient art and a doorway I always wanted to walk through. Now that the window is open the fear if trying, or doing something new, no longer exists. It no longer limits the infinite possibilities of fun. Because now, I know how true it is for me. Just like surfing in Peru. You learn how to do things in other places that you normally overlook at home. Then you begin to appreciate how close to home it always was, and start to go. I just had to get out of my comfort zone and try something new, that I always knew would make joy come true.
