Comments: From Greece to Bulgaria I made my way through into the Baltic states. I met a young woman named Liliyana in Sofia. An online friends daughter was from there and was going through the process of studying to become a lawyer. After her final exam, we met outside in the evening on the side of the road nearby her school by an illuminated billboard that lit her during our video shoot, as well as the ambient light from the headlights of passing cars. An odd place to make a portrait but also a challenge well accepted. It was late after landing in Bulgaria and did not have much time until the next day to find someone. It was a long day of travel since I had left Athens and drove up the coast towards Thessaloniki where I dropped off the rental car and boarded a flight over the boarder. I would’ve drove but I wasn’t allowed to enter the country with a car due to their policies so had to impromptu fly to the capital. It was a long and lovely drive though, beside the sea the whole way north. Liliyana met with me for a few minutes before she had to meet her husband for dinner. It was a quick meeting, a quick shoot. And all I needed was ten seconds to create: the beauty of this project was the people who chose to be involved understood the premise and trusted me almost instantly. I believe the camera has that power, a film camera, and a pure intention can go a long way. It’s like the universe sets up the pitch for you to hit a grand slam when you take on a project with a theme or a story. The pieces and people fall together as you make your way through all the moments and all of the unknown, the uncertainty is not scary, it’s exciting with a scoop of vision and a teaspoon of faith, and a pinch of trust in the process. The recipe to success is simple. Just keep going. Even when you don’t know, just create with what you have in front of you to make the shot, to make that painting, to write that song, to code that machine. We are the authors of our destiny. What is the story you want to tell? Who are the people you want to honor, and share that with? To realize a big dream is to take the first baby step towards getting there. And as you keep going. Day by day, work to work, you’ll be further along than whence you started. Whatever that project is, or idea you have, and even the person you want to forgive, now is the time to start. Because there is no better time than the present moment!
