44 years have now passed since Franco Basaglia's 1978 law came into force. The Italian psychiatrist not only ensured that mentally ill people regained their rights, but also revolutionized treatment in institutions.
Today, we have good mental health care in most of the Western world. The deficits are still in the social treatment of people who suffer from mental illnesses or disorders.
While there is some basic acceptance for socially prevalent disorders such as depression, people with somewhat more complex disorders such as borderline, schizophrenia, and other personality disorders are still heavily stigmatized and marginalized.
Only when we include these people in our midst of society, then we have really created a basis that helps these people in the long term.
