Even though it’s close to 40 years since the Chernobyl accident there is still food in Sweden that is so radioactive that it cannot be exported or sold in grocery stores.
Because of unfortunate weather conditions when the accident happened and the sort of biom the fallout got absorbed into the radion levels are still high in parts of the country.
Normally the recommendation is 300 Bq/kg cesium but we allow up to 1 500 Bq/kg for food that is from the wild - berries, nuts, mushrooms, fish, reindeer and elk. There is still food that has a higher concentration and shouldn’t be consumed.
Reindeers eat plants that absorb radion and have levels of around 5000 Bq/kg, way above what is deemed safe, but I still eat it. And I eat wild berries and mushrooms too.
This is a reminder that a nuclear accident, or bomb, can still have an impact on your country even if you’re far away.
