“White Rest” depicts a kneeling animal, with excessive horns protruding from the midpoint of the body. The imperfection of scanning leaves an asymmetry and turns its burden of roses, teeth, and tongue from the original sculpture into an ambiguous mass. The overall elephantine shape is inspired by African headrests, which are often carved with animal forms and motifs. In this case the dimensions can be seen as monumental, and it feels overbearing as one rises. But seen from above, it is less intimidating. Who left this offering on its back? Who rests their head on this beast, and how can they sleep?
