My first encounter with the Fates happened when I had reached the age where I would no longer sit on my grandfathers knee and let him count the freckles on my nose.
During a particularly busy Christmas dinner my grandfather took me aside to tell me that he had heard whispers from the Fates. He said there wasn’t much time left and that there were things he had to tell me, things that could not wait.
He passed away a few days later.
Since then, I have met the Fates at moments when life and death blurred and once I made a bargain with one of them to keep my mother alive for a little longer.
