The Midnight Bluebean is a truly unique and fascinating flower.
The striking red flower head and electric blue broad leaves attract nocturnal pollinators. Technically a lunar flower, it begins to bloom as the sunsets, and is closed once again at dawn.
One of the most interesting aspects of this flower is its ability to grow beans from its skeletal spine. Not only does the spine transmit information from the root to the flower and hold the thick leaves and body of the plant up, the spine protects the root system of the beans.
Sweet to taste, like a plum, the blue beans are a culinary delicacy. Furthermore, the bright red flower is used as a garnish. By weight, the beans are one of the most expensive delicacies in the world.
