On October 12, 1492, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus made landfall in what is now the Bahamas. Columbus and his ships were shocked to discover an all inclusive resort known to locals as Atlantis. Modern scholars believe that this civilization in the Bahamas once made contact with the Egyptians in centuries past. It is therefore likely that this ancient communication inspired the legend of Atlantis written by Plato around 360 B.C.
