Inspired by lithographic postcards of the 1940s, Where Do I Belong? Represents the second half of the American Dream: go west, find gold. Ever since I was quite young I desired to go west. I loved it. I like hot weather and I like the west coast. Southern California is the perfect convergence of those things.
But now that I’m here, I keep pondering if I belong. I celebrate holidays with chosen families who are from here. I have real roots here. I cannot stand the LA stereotypes that permeate the internet. That’s not my LA. But is my LA supposed to be home? I constantly ponder this.
Where Do I Belong? Is the only shot taken in California throughout this entire visual memoir. It intentionally stands alone, as a focal point and an anchor. Taken as a 5-frame parallax photograph, Where Do I Belong? Explores the tension between home being a place or a feeling.
