Steve Pikelny has been creating art online since 2017. Many of his largest collections are generative projects like Fake Internet Money and Dopamine Machines, but between these projects he works on wilder experiments, often focused on a financial instrument. In 2017 he released FastCashMoneyPlus, the artist’s initial coin offering, and in 2023, Money Making Opportunity, which trapped thousands of dollars in a smart contract to be distributed in a digital version of the game theory exercise ‘the pirate game’. As a generative art series with an overtly financial focus, Money Vortex sits somewhere between these parallel practices: its goal is to imbue the spectator with a spirit of abundance and wealth. Drawing from a series of popular videos and livestreams on YouTube which beckon viewers to “Try Listening For 3 Minutes, You Will Receive A Huge Amount Of Money,” and “Remove all negative blockages as you travel through the Abundance Gate and release abundance - love, wealth,” Pikelny’s works allow viewers to manifest wealth into their lives, as channeled through ambient music and hypnotic visuals. Running as live code, the vortexes can play affirmations endlessly, asking viewers to repeat the vow, “I am open to infinite wealth,” and more invocations into eternity.
