Verloop — Dégradé
Verloop – Dégradé begins with a creative exchange between Rik Oostenbroek's artistic vision and David Aerne's generative systems. First, Oostenbroek carefully crafted his signature gradients by hand.
Aerne then created custom algorithms to transform these gradients into dynamic digital compositions. Through various iterations, the algorithm generated variations that kept the original essence while creating fresh interpretations.
The gradients were handpicked by Oostenbroek from numerous algorithmic outputs for the book edition (premiered at the Paris Photo 2024 Art Fair in Grand Palais). He selected them based on their beauty, striking contrasts, or unexpected elements that caught his eye.

Core properties of the algorithm
bookSeed
: The seed used to generate the piece in the book.
gradientName
: String representing the name of the palette used from the selected gradient generated from a collection.
The names are generated using a collection of 30241 names that David Aerne collected over the course of several years.
phases
: Number indicating how many steps are used in the gradient generation
flow
: String indicating the modification type for the gradient. Can be one of:
Noise - More chaotic outputs.
Pow - Incrementally growing gradients.
Linear - Straight lines.
Sin - Wave Shaped Gradient.
Cos - Wave Shaped gradient.
focus
: Number value that affects the gradient's zoom level.
Layout Properties of the algorithm:
orientation
: String indicating the overall orientation of the piece: Either "horizontal" or "vertical"
gradientOrientation
: String indicating how the gradients themselves are oriented: Can be "horizontal", "vertical", or "random"
irregularStipes
: Boolean indicating whether irregular stripe widths are used
reversedGradientOrder
: Boolean indicating whether the gradient order has been reversed
