Church, Cártama, Spain, 1966

Joel Meyerowitz embarked on an extensive journey across Europe between 1966 and 1967, his travels taking him to numerous countries including France, Greece, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Bulgaria, Morocco, England, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland.

Today, we find ourselves in Cártama, a quaint town nestled near Málaga in the heart of Andalusia, Spain. The office walls are adorned with an array of ceramic ware, showcasing a diverse range of influences. Some pieces exhibit intricate Islamic calligraphy, others depict iconic landmarks such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, and some even pay tribute to historical figures like John Fitzgerald Kennedy. This eclectic collection appears to be the handiwork of the local Parish Minister.

Andalusia's history is deeply intertwined with the Moors, who ruled parts of the region from the early 8th to the late 15th centuries – an impressive span of 800 years. Their legacy is substantial and visible even today, with two of the region's most significant and frequently visited monuments – the Alhambra and the Mezquita – standing as testament to their historic influence.
