I was the inaugural digital artist-in-residence at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) between April and December 2023. Of all the works I made during the residency, this piece best captures my impressions of Toledo, the city where I first settled in in the US. Toledo has a long history with glass, a history that dates to 1888 when Edward Drummond Libbey brought his glass company to the city. This brought about the first renaissance in the city, leading to population growth and development, including the establishment of TMA in April 1901. While glass remains an undeniable part of the city, I have noticed that a second renaissance is gearing up to take place in Toledo; and this time it is not tied to glass. It is tied to residents of the city who, in their individual capacity, are building and uplifting Toledo by getting seriously involved in various community projects happening around. ABITT (which stands for “Art Brings Toledo Together”) is every Toledoan who is doing something in their own way to make this second renaissance happen faster. This is a tribute to every one of them. The artist’s proof of this piece is currently held by the Toledo Museum of Art, making it the first on-chain digital art to enter the museum’s collection.
