“Five Self-Portraits at Ages 18, 30, 45, 60, and 70” by Nancy Burson was created in 1976. The work presents five portraits of the artist at the ages of 18, 30, 45, 60, and 70, reimagined with the assistance of a makeup artist to simulate her future appearance. This series laid the groundwork for her pioneering patented age-morphing technology, known as The Method and Apparatus for Producing an Image of a Person’s Face at a Different Age. Originally developed at MIT, it was later used to create many of her artworks. The five portrait images were later transformed into a video work, where each image morphs into the next.
