GLACIAL BIOME (The Fourth Phase of Water) by Sougwen Chung extends the artist’s BODY MACHINE (MERIDIANS) series — an ongoing investigation into spatial movement, speculative machines, and planetary biomes. In this chapter, Chung focuses on the glacial biome, exploring the phase transitions of water and the glacier as both archive and agent of planetary change.
The series comprises ten digital moving-image works, each generated from data collected during a 2024 expedition to the Arctic Circle. During this time, Chung gathered glacial scans, polar light studies, and embodied movement traces using environmental sensors aboard a ship navigating the high north.
Building upon cybernetic and biomimetic methodologies, GLACIAL BIOME treats spatial data as a generative force. Movement—of bodies, water, and planetary systems—is encoded into each digital work, evoking the way glaciers preserve deep histories in ice.
