Luminaria Fantastica is a bioluminescent fungus from tropical rainforest canopies with semi-resupinate fruiting bodies featuring wavy, lobed caps merging in bright orange to pale blue gradients, with veined and spotted hymenial patterns. The smooth cap surface has coral-like folds; gills are reduced or absent, replaced by a porous, labyrinthine spore-bearing surface. Stipes are short or absent, fruiting bodies 10-25 cm tall, ≤15 g. Its blue-green (450-495 nm) bioluminescence from luciferin-luciferase in hymenial tissue attracts nocturnal spore dispersers. Saprotrophic on decaying hardwood at 15-25°C, it aids nutrient cycling. Belonging to the Irido Myco cluster near Agaricales, spores disperse via wind from elevated porous surfaces. Extensive mycelium degrades lignin. Currently near threatened, it is vital to tropical microecosystems.
