Luminara Iridescentis, from Latin 'luminara' (light bearer) and 'iridescentis' (iridescent), is a bioluminescent fungus in the Aetherium Arborescens cluster, family Physalacriaceae, genus Aetherium, order Agaricales. It forms delicate translucent clusters up to 15 cm tall with convex to uplifted caps bearing defined gills, glossy blue-green surfaces, and slender, fibrous, semi-translucent stipes tapering to caps. Emitting soft blue-green glow (450-495 nm) via luciferin-luciferase localized in gills, it attracts nocturnal insects for spore dispersal. Saprotrophic on decomposing organic matter in tropical forest floors, it decomposes cellulose and lignin through an extensive mycelial network. Tolerant of 5-25°C, it favors shaded, humid microhabitats. Gentle swaying promotes spore release, sustaining soil health and ecosystem symbiosis.
