Luminisphaera Noctilucens, meaning “shining sphere of the night,” is a bioluminescent agaricoid fungus from tropical forest floors. It features convex to broadly umbonate caps (10-25 cm) with translucent, iridescent reddish spots and creamy yellow luminescent gills beneath. The robust, cylindrical stipe supports clustered fruiting bodies typical of genus Aetherium Arborescens. Bioluminescence (450-495 nm) arises from luciferin-luciferase in basidial and gill tissues, attracting nocturnal spore dispersers. Thriving on decomposing hardwood litter at 10-20°C, it is a saprotrophic decomposer in family Aetheriaceae, order Agaricales. Spore dispersal is passive ballistic, enhanced by insects. Its extensive mycelium aids nutrient cycling, supporting forest productivity. This rare but locally abundant species enriches mycodiversity with 50 related species.
