Luminispectra Galactica, from Latin 'lumen' (light) and 'spectra' (emission spectrum), is a bioluminescent fungal species in the Luminous Terra cluster, emitting a striking blue-green glow (450-495 nm). It has convex to flat caps with translucent textures, iridescent and golden margins, and closely spaced lamellate gills radiating light. Stout, smooth stipes (0-15 cm) support dense clusters on decayed woody substrates. Bioluminescence is via a luciferin-luciferase enzymatic system, likely attracting spore dispersers in low-light tropical caves. Thriving in humid caves at 10-20°C, it is saprotrophic on lignocellulosic matter. Taxonomically in Agaricales, genus Luminispectra, it includes ten species and holds rare protected status. Extensive mycelia decompose organic matter, aiding nutrient cycling.
