Luminopteris Iridis, named from Latin 'lumen' (light) and 'pteris' (wing), is a bioluminescent lepidopteran with translucent wings featuring small, vibrant spots emitting blue-green light (470-530 nm) visible in dim rainforest understories. With a wingspan up to 10 cm, its wings show intricate venation, scalloped edges, and small perforations. The slender body (<2 g) has elongated antennae and fine legs for rhythmic gliding through dense foliage. Bioluminescent organs near wing veins and thorax produce gentle illumination for communication or predator deterrence. Endemic to tropical rainforests with 20-30°C and humid shaded microhabitats, L. Iridis belongs to the Aurorae Lepidoptera cluster (~100 species). Its gliding flight and subtle bioluminescence reflect adaptations to low-light environments, making it key for studying Lepidoptera bioluminescence.
