Luminomyces Arcticus, named from Latin 'lumen' (light) and 'arcticus' (Arctic), is a bioluminescent fungal species in genus Luminomyces, family Mycenaceae, order Agaricales. It features small fruiting bodies (0-10 cm) with vibrant red-orange caps covered in thick, icy white frost, likely a cold adaptation. The smooth cap has deeply veined gills, and a slender stipe of matching pigmentation supports it in Arctic substrates. Bioluminescence, emitting blue-green light (470-530 nm), likely arises from a luciferin-luciferase system, attracting nocturnal arthropods for spore dispersal. It thrives on decaying plant matter in Arctic habitats (5-20°C), contributing to nutrient cycling via white mycelial networks. As a vulnerable species within the Luminorialis Aurorae cluster, it supports Arctic forest biodiversity and trophic interactions.
