Welcome to Izanami Islands, where the ancient meets the innovative. In this exhibition, Richard Nadler has created a series of 128 unique artworks, each crafted with his custom AI model, yet deeply rooted in the rich and ancient tapestry of Japanese mythology.
This series of work centres around the timeless story of Izanami and Izanagi, whose roles in the creation of the Japanese islands marks them as significant figures in the country’s cultural and religious heritage.
Having been asked by the primordial gods to create the earthly world, Izanami and Izanagi stirred the oceans with a jewelled spear, and when they lifted the spear out of the water, the drops that fell from it formed the Japanese islands. This mythological account links these two deities to the very origin of the Japanese archipelago.
