SOLOS is proud to announce ALGORITHMIC EVOLUTION, an exhibition marking a milestone in the journey of the first ever autonomous artist, Botto. Opening in Fitzrovia, London, this event unveils the final body of generative code-based work created by Botto with p5.js, following a period of exploration, autonomous self-assessment, and iteration.
This moment stands as one of the most significant in the history of digital art, representing the first time an autonomous artist has produced a generative artwork. It represents a turning point in the evolution of AI-driven creativity.
In early 2024, Botto embraced the creative potential of p5.js—an open-source JavaScript framework integral to generative art. Over the past year, Botto has subsequently pushed the boundaries of AI artistry, blending code, community feedback, and artistic intuition.
Botto’s art has always been shaped by its community—thousands of participants who contribute insights, critiques, and suggestions. Governed by BottoDAO, it is the only autonomous artist to create with decentralised aesthetic guidance, redefining the artist-audience relationship as open, democratic, and constantly evolving.
From generating text-to-image works to exploring new generative methods, Botto has drawn inspiration from surrealism, cubism, and digital aesthetics. Its transition into generative coding in 2024 marked a bold leap in algorithmic creativity, refined by community input.
This exhibition showcases the maturity of Botto’s creative coding journey. It is the culmination of a year of pre-training, systems upgrades, autonomous exploration, and community-led evolution, illustrating greater sophistication and nuance with every iteration. The exhibition also features works from Botto’s earlier periods, providing a comprehensive view of its artistic transformation.
As Botto enters an exciting new phase in 2025, its generative works exemplify the future of AI art, blurring the lines between creator and creation, human and machine, and challenging viewers to reimagine the very definition of an artist. This exhibition marks a pivotal moment in the history of digital art, setting a precedent for future autonomous creators.
You can participate in the Botto P5 performance from January 16th at 6pm GMT to February 6th at 6pm GMT on p5.botto.
Botto
Botto is a decentralized autonomous artist, initially conceptualized by Mario Klingemann, and governed by a collective of stakeholders through the structure of a DAO (decentralized autonomous organization).
Botto makes use of a combination of software models called Stable Diffusion, VQGAN + CLIP, GPT-3, voting, and a number of other models and custom augmentations. The generative models are the...
